New beginnings.

If you know me, you will know that I am terrified of the thought of having children. Not because I don't like children, in actual fact, I love them. I work with lots of babies every day, and I'm a trained teacher! I have 2 beautiful, wonderful nieces and I adore every fibre of their being. I have the best conversations with children, sprinkled with innocence and also a certain level of straight down the line intellect that gets shrouded and corrupted as you get older and pumped with information. So, this Baby Fear doesn't come from a dislike of children at all.

In fact, I'm not sure where it comes from. I often think it's a sense of responsibility that seems far greater than me, something out of control massive, something so monumental that it sort of deserves the fear that I've attached to it.

I work in a place where families can get support for all kinds of reasons, and we see a lot of different families and children come through our doors. Similarly, I've worked in varying school settings where all manner of children are all sat down on one bit of carpet, and are taught the same curriculum. The title of this post is new beginnings, because essentially that is what children are, it's a new life, and a new beginning. But I was looking around me in the baby room at work the other day and just having a moment of distinct realisation about these new beginnings.

There is a song by a band called MuteMath which is called We All Break The Same. It's true, we do. We all begin somewhere that everyone begins. The words to that MuteMath song go 'all the tears we cry tell us we're made the same'. We all start life in the physical sense the same way that everyone starts. We are all born of our mother, and we all begin life with that first scream, drawing our first breath of this world in the same way that everyone else does. But then, that's it. It's as if the 6 billion people on the planet have the same starting point which then breaks off into 6 billion tiny little paths, weaving upwards and onwards onto something different. There are of course moments where we will all go through similar events, but everything before or after these events will shape us, mould us and cause us to react to these events in different ways. But the fact remains, we all come from somewhere.

We all have a new beginning.

So, I feel I may have buried my point here amid all this talk of babies and contemplating the population of our planet, but while I was looking around the room at these tiny little lives, some barely crawling, walking or talking I was amazed. That we all start at the same place, yet any one of those children could in ten years be in a completely different place than another. And also that a new beginning can happen at any point in those fragile little lives, leaving something behind and moving onwards towards a brand new adventure.

Life is really exciting.

Personification: Sunshine.

Dear Sunshine,
Hello. It's Emmah. Okay, so you don't know me. I just wanted to let you know that you suck today. The fact that you were a no show really made my day slow and horrid, especially as I had to look out of the window at your arch enemy Rain slide down the window, taunting me more and more with each drop. I understand that it must be very difficult for you to remain a glowing ball of light in the sky all the time, and that sometimes you must get a bit bored of people constantly abusing you for energy, suntans and to melt stuff and that, but really... I needed you today. And you let me down.
Consider this your first warning, the next time you desert me like this, I'm going to be having stronger words with you about your defiant behaviour. I simply won't put up with being constantly let down by you and your rays.
Thank you for your time.
Emmah in rainy Dorset. xo

Great Things About Life This Week #5

  • Bank Holiday Weekends: Most people get an extra bit of the weekend. This is clearly a winner. Mine was spent watching Jerry Maguire and eating the best crisps ever.
  • Eggs. Eggs for breakfast, clearly a champion start to the day. Fried, boiled, poached, scrambled... the ways are endless as are the possibilities when you start your day with eggs. Sure you aren't supposed to eat more than about 3 a week, probably not even that many, but still. CHAMPION.
  • Sunshine: makes everything better.

Great Things About Life This Week #4

  • The Natural History Museum. What a wicked time I had there on Saturday! Dinosaurs, a massive fetus, lots of shiny rocks and looking at all of these things with one of your favourite people. What more could you want for your Saturday afternoon?
  • My Sunday. Which was spent with a massive bunch of super awesome people and families and there was BBQ food. All in all, a pretty epic weekend.
  • This week is speeding by, which means that a fun weekend awaits.

Great Things About Life This Week #3

I should have done this on Monday but Monday was not a good day. It has destroyed my positive streak and my glass is now well and truly half empty again. I'm really looking forward to this weekend though, so perhaps the liquid formation in my cup will drastically improve and I will see life in a whole new light. Who knows. Let's wait and see. I for one am excited.

  • New glasses: These are my favourites. I got 2 pairs at Specsavers, I also got contact lenses. Hello great times, goodbye bank balance.
  • My niece. She is great and on said bad day of Monday, she cheered me up and came out with this really helpful comment: 'Why can't cars drive themselves anyway!' MY THOUGHTS EXACTLY.
  • James Yuill. Go and listen to him.

Massively Great Quotes #14

"You build on failure. You use it as a stepping stone. Close the door on the past. You don't try and forget the mistakes, but you don't dwell on it. You don't let it have any of your energy or any of your time, or any of your space."
-Johnny Cash

Wicked Cool Bands #7

"And when you left you kissed my lips
You told me you'd never ever forget these images, no."
A Fine Frenzy, Almost Lover

I want to be a redhead and be super incredibly beautiful and talented like Ali Sudol. She is a wonderful singer/songwriter under the name A Fine Frenzy and writes beautiful love songs and plays piano and generally wins at life in my humble opinion.

I can't remember how I found her, it was proably a Spotify find, but I do remember instantly loving her voice. Amazing songs include Almost Lover, Come On Come Out and the wonderful Near To You. She has an official site here and you can listen those songs on her Myspace here! If you've got a heart and good ears, you will probably like her. Enjoy!

Great Things About Life This Week #2

It's Monday. It's time for Great Things About Life this week, because I'm all about the positivity lately.

  • You can't actually see it in that picture because I have a blanket over me but I bought a Back To The Future T-Shirt yesterday. It's the greatest thing I've owned in ages.
  • Visits to see friends! I went to Winchester and Southampton this weekend, and caught up with some of my favourite people. Some people I hadn't seen for months and months, and some people I hadn't seen for weeks but it felt like months. I came home feeling what I always feel when I visit these people, blessed and happy.
  • PAYYYDAYYY! This has meant I have been able to buy some really exciting things such as train tickets, an iPod, a present for a friend, my Back To The Future t-shirt, some new headphones and a wicked Chinese that I had on Friday night.
Hope you have had some great things in your life this week too.

Wonderful Websites #4

Not entirely sure that 'Wonderful' is the right adjective to describe this website, but here we go anyway.

Basically, texts people have received or sent when they have been highly intoxicated. Some are frightening, some are awful, most are hilarious.

My favourites that I've seen so far:

  • (678): why did i wake up with a kid named Raphael in my bed this morning?
(770): I dont know but you did call last night to tell me you found the last ninja turtle

  • (202): He's so far in the closet he's in Narnia

  • (925): "Ever since I killed her kid she be actin' shady." Actual quote overheard at Marine World just now. Oh God.
